Complete reference of supported allergens and their definitions.

FDA Big 9 Allergens

These nine allergens are always tracked. They account for approximately 90% of food allergies in the United States.

1. Milk

Also known as: Dairy

Includes:

  • Milk (whole, skim, 2%)
  • Butter and ghee
  • Cheese (all types)
  • Cream and half-and-half
  • Yogurt
  • Ice cream
  • Whey and casein
  • Lactose

Common hidden sources:

  • Baked goods
  • Chocolate
  • Processed meats
  • Salad dressings
  • Non-dairy creamers (may contain casein)

2. Eggs

Includes:

  • Whole eggs
  • Egg whites
  • Egg yolks
  • Egg powder
  • Albumin
  • Lysozyme
  • Mayonnaise

Common hidden sources:

  • Pasta
  • Baked goods
  • Breading/batter
  • Meringue
  • Marshmallows
  • Some wines

3. Fish

Includes:

  • All finned fish
  • Salmon, tuna, cod, etc.
  • Fish sauce
  • Fish oil
  • Anchovies
  • Caesar dressing (often contains anchovies)

Note: Fish and shellfish are separate allergens. Someone with fish allergy may tolerate shellfish and vice versa.

4. Shellfish

Also known as: Crustacean shellfish

Includes:

  • Shrimp
  • Crab
  • Lobster
  • Crayfish
  • Prawns

Note: Mollusks (clams, oysters, mussels) are tracked separately as an additional allergen.

5. Tree Nuts

Includes:

  • Almonds
  • Brazil nuts
  • Cashews
  • Chestnuts
  • Hazelnuts/filberts
  • Macadamia nuts
  • Pecans
  • Pine nuts
  • Pistachios
  • Walnuts

Note: Peanuts are legumes, not tree nuts, and tracked separately.

Common hidden sources:

  • Pesto
  • Marzipan
  • Nougat
  • Granola
  • Certain oils
  • Natural flavorings

6. Peanuts

Also known as: Groundnuts

Includes:

  • Whole peanuts
  • Peanut butter
  • Peanut oil
  • Peanut flour
  • Peanut protein

Common hidden sources:

  • Asian cuisine (many dishes)
  • Baked goods
  • Candy/chocolate
  • Sauces
  • Ice cream

7. Wheat

Includes:

  • Wheat flour (all types)
  • Bread
  • Pasta
  • Couscous
  • Bulgur
  • Farina
  • Semolina
  • Spelt
  • Wheat starch

Note: Wheat allergy differs from celiac disease (gluten intolerance). See Gluten in additional allergens.

  • Soy sauce
  • Beer
  • Processed meats
  • Salad dressings
  • Soup thickeners

8. Soybeans

Also known as: Soy

Includes:

  • Soybeans
  • Soy milk
  • Tofu
  • Tempeh
  • Soy sauce
  • Edamame
  • Miso
  • Soy protein
  • Soy lecithin

Common hidden sources:

  • Vegetable oil
  • Many processed foods
  • Baked goods
  • Canned tuna
  • Infant formula

9. Sesame

Added to Big 9 in 2023

Includes:

  • Sesame seeds
  • Sesame oil
  • Tahini
  • Halvah
  • Hummus (often contains tahini)

Common hidden sources:

  • Bread and buns
  • Asian cuisine
  • Middle Eastern cuisine
  • Granola
  • Spice blends

These can be enabled in Allergens > Settings.

Gluten

Not the same as wheat allergy

Includes proteins found in:

  • Wheat
  • Barley
  • Rye
  • Triticale
  • Oats (via cross-contamination)

Important for: People with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.

Mustard

Includes:

  • Mustard seeds
  • Mustard powder
  • Prepared mustard
  • Mustard oil

Common hidden sources:

  • Salad dressings
  • Marinades
  • Processed meats
  • Curry powder

Celery

Includes:

  • Celery stalks
  • Celery leaves
  • Celeriac (celery root)
  • Celery salt
  • Celery seeds

Common hidden sources:

  • Soups
  • Stocks
  • Salads
  • Spice blends

Lupin

Also known as: Lupine, lupini beans

Includes:

  • Lupin flour
  • Lupin seeds/beans

Common hidden sources:

  • Gluten-free baked goods
  • Pasta
  • Some European breads

Mollusks

Different from shellfish (crustaceans)

Includes:

  • Clams
  • Mussels
  • Oysters
  • Scallops
  • Squid/calamari
  • Octopus
  • Snails/escargot

Sulfites

A preservative, not a food

Found in:

  • Wine and beer
  • Dried fruits
  • Pickled foods
  • Shrimp and other seafood
  • Grape juice
  • Bottled lemon/lime juice

Note: Not a true allergy but can cause reactions in sensitive individuals.

Alcohol

Includes:

  • Beer
  • Wine
  • Spirits
  • Cooking wine
  • Alcohol-based extracts (vanilla, etc.)

Note: Some people react to alcohol itself; others to ingredients in alcoholic beverages.

Regulatory Notes

Allergen labeling requirements vary by region:

  • USA: Big 9 required (as of 2023)
  • EU: 14 allergens required
  • Canada: Priority allergens list
