Understand how diners see and interact with allergen information on your public menu.

Diner Experience

When diners view your menu, they can:

  1. See allergen badges on each item
  2. Filter items by allergens to avoid
  3. View detailed allergen information
  4. Flag potential inaccuracies

Allergen Badges

Badge Display

Items show colored badges:

Badge Placement

Badges appear:

  • Next to item name in list view
  • Below description in detail view
  • In filter results summary

Badge Overflow

When items have many allergens:

  • First 3-4 badges shown
  • “+N more” indicator for additional
  • Tap to see full list

Allergen Filter

How Diners Filter

  1. Tap the Filter button on the menu
  2. Select allergens to avoid
  3. Menu updates to show safe options
  4. Flagged items display warnings

Filter Modes

Diners can choose filtering strictness:

Filter Results

After filtering:

  • Safe items - Highlighted, shown prominently
  • Contains items - Hidden or marked with warning
  • Unconfirmed items - Shown with “unverified” note

When diners tap an item, they see:

Full allergen breakdown:

Allergens: ✓ Safe for: Peanuts, Tree Nuts, Shellfish ⚠ Contains: Milk, Wheat ? Unconfirmed: Sesame, Soy

Ingredients List

If you’ve added ingredients:

Ingredients: flour, butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla

Allergen Notes

Any notes you’ve added:

Note: Prepared in a facility that also processes peanuts.

Flagging Items

How Diners Flag

  1. Tap the flag icon on any item
  2. Select the allergen in question
  3. Choose suggested correction
  4. Add optional notes
  5. Submit flag

What Diners See After Flagging

  • Confirmation message
  • “Thank you for helping improve accuracy”
  • Option to provide contact info

Flag Visibility

Flags are not visible to other diners. Only you see flags in the dashboard.

Combo & Variant Display

Combo Allergens

Combos show allergens from ALL possible options:

Family Meal Contains: Milk, Wheat, Eggs, Shellfish Note: Allergens shown for all possible choices. Your selection may contain fewer allergens.

Variant Allergens

Variants show:

  • Parent item’s combined allergens
  • Per-option allergens when selected
Pizza Contains: Milk, Wheat Your selection (Veggie): Contains: Milk, Wheat Safe for: Eggs, Shellfish

Unconfirmed Handling

Default Display

Unconfirmed allergens display as:

  • Not marked as safe
  • Neutral indicator
  • “Unverified” label

Diner Expectations

Diners should understand:

  • Unconfirmed ≠ Safe
  • Ask staff if uncertain
  • Err on side of caution

Messaging

Your menu shows:

Items marked “Unconfirmed” have not been verified for this allergen. Please ask your server for more information.

What You Control

In Allergens > Settings, configure:

Maximize Clarity

  1. Verify thoroughly - Fewer unconfirmed items
  2. Add ingredients - Diners appreciate transparency
  3. Use notes - Explain cross-contamination risks
  4. Keep updated - Recipe changes = allergen updates

Support Diners

  1. Train staff - They answer allergen questions
  2. Respond to flags - Shows you care about accuracy
  3. Provide alternatives - Help diners find safe options

Common Questions from Diners

“What does Unconfirmed mean?” We haven’t verified this allergen status. Please ask your server.

“Is [item] safe for me?” Check the allergen section on the item. If it shows Safe for your allergen, it’s been verified. If uncertain, ask staff.

“I think this information is wrong.” Please use the flag feature to let us know. We review all flags within 24 hours.

“Can you make this without [allergen]?” Ask your server about modifications. Our allergen info reflects standard preparation.

Troubleshooting

”Badges not showing”

Check that:

  • Item has been published
  • Allergens have been marked
  • Display settings aren’t hiding badges

”Filter not working”

Verify that:

  • Items have allergen data
  • Filter mode matches expectations
  • Page has fully loaded

”Diner can’t submit flag”

Ensure:

  • Flagging is enabled in settings
  • Item is on the public menu
  • Connection is stable
