Tags & Filtering

Organize your menu items with custom tags for better management and filtering.

What Are Tags?

Tags are custom labels you create to organize items:

  • Dietary tags - Vegetarian, Vegan, Keto
  • Feature tags - Chef’s Special, New, Seasonal
  • Internal tags - Needs Photo, Review Pending
  • Category tags - Gluten-Free Options, Kid-Friendly

Tags help you:

  • Filter the items table quickly
  • Apply bulk actions to related items
  • Organize items beyond menu sections

System Tags

Atlee automatically applies certain system tags:

TagMeaning
_comboItem is a combo
_variant-optionItem is used as a variant option
_componentItem is a combo component

System tags:

  • Start with underscore
  • Cannot be edited or removed
  • Help filter item types automatically
  • Are hidden from public menu

Filtering System Tags

Use system tags to manage item types:

  • Hide variant options: Exclude _variant-option
  • Show only combos: Include _combo
  • Find orphan components: Include _component

Tag Best Practices

Naming Conventions

  • Keep names short: “Vegan” not “Suitable for Vegans”
  • Use consistent capitalization: “Spicy” or “spicy”, not both
  • Avoid duplicates: One “Vegetarian” tag, not multiple

Organization Tips

  1. Create tags before you need them - Plan your tag structure
  2. Use sparingly - Too many tags reduces usefulness
  3. Review periodically - Remove unused tags
  4. Document internally - Team should know what each tag means

Tags vs. Categories

Use categories for menu organization (Appetizers, Entrees). Use tags for internal management (Needs Review, Seasonal).

Common Questions

Can diners see tags? No. Tags are internal only. Use item descriptions for diner-facing labels.

How many tags can an item have? No limit, but keep it reasonable (5-10 max recommended).

Can I import items with tags? Not directly via CSV. Import items first, then apply tags via bulk actions.

Do tags affect search? Yes. Search includes tag names, so “vegetarian” matches items with that tag.
